I think this might be best done on our wiki, so I've put 2 pages, and started filling in some thoughts/ analysis/ observations.
Please feel free to edit / improve. Doing the analysis will take some time, so it's just a start :-) The pages can be found by going to the cwiki and in the left nav bar, clicking on "Pages", and looking for "Modernizing the internals of UIMA" and "Analysis of Cas-obj" in the "Recently Updated" column.
