Hi Peter, thanks for your comments!  I'm wondering if I have been focused on 
the wrong "problem" all this time. So, let me ask:

Is the issue that started all of this a performance issue - where you didn't 
want the map from Cas feature structures to JCas cover objects, created in the 
pear, to get "thrown away", and a new map created, when accessing the 
FeatureStructures from the main pipeline after the Pear exits?
