Apropos Python: for those who don't know it yet: DKPro Cassis provides a pure-Python library to load, manipulate and save UIMA XMI CAS files. https://pypi.org/project/dkpro-cassis/ The library can e.g. help interfacing between UIMA and the current generations of deep learning libraries, spacy, etc. a the data level.
