The limitation here is the thrift buffer size which is 15mb under the hood. It 
needs to be below that (perhaps substantially) given how the batch mutations 
are assembled under the hood. 

Another thought - part of this might need to be the 'don't index obviously 
indexable values' issue that's been lurking out there for a while.
