SCP's performance is tired tightly to TTL of the link between systems creating
a significant bottleneck especially over higher latency links
GridFTP http://toolkit.globus.org/toolkit/data/gridftp/
or
High performance SSH http://www.psc.edu/index.php/hpn-ssh
would provide significant performance boosts when moving large amounts of data
between machines, especially as latency between them increases.
