Andy Kurth closed VCL-8.
------------------------
Resolution: Won't Fix
Closing issue. This was created in 2009 and Sysprep is rarely used anymore. It
is only used for bare-metal Windows images. Little if any value would be gained
by this.
> Add option to save Windows images using Sysprep without changing the computer
> name

> Issue Type: Improvement
> Components: database, vcld (backend), web gui (frontend)
> Environment: Windows XP images
> Reporter: Andy Kurth
> Priority: Minor
>
> VCL currently has the ability to either use Sysprep or not when saving
> Windows images. The majority of Windows images use Sysprep.
> If Sysprep is used, the name of the computer is changed for each computer the
> image is loaded on. If Sysprep is not used, the name of computers loaded are
> the same as the computer used to capture the image. This is the main reason
> why Sysprep is currently disabled for a handful of images. The images don't
> really need Sysprep disabled, but need the computer name to be the same as
> the captured computer. Some applications write the computer name in
> locations all over the hard drive and in the registry. These applications
> fail if an image is saved and reloaded using a different computer name.
> Disabling Sysprep has some drawbacks. Device drivers are not loaded when the
> image is loaded. This problem has been encountered for some images with
> Sysprep disabled. The images may fail to load on machines with different
> hardware.
> It would be beneficial to have an addional option to use Sysprep but not
> change the computer name. This is possible by including the name of the
> computer used to capture the image in the sysprep.inf file.
> This option would need to be reflected in the database and web front end for
> configuring image options.
