We are very long overdue in getting a release out. I'd like to start working
toward that. Here are a few things I think we need to ensure to include:

* vcld running with recent versions of perl (versions included as default in
current Linux distros)
* support netplan on Ubuntu
* native support for nftables
* running all VCL components on a different Linux distro. Since CentOS is no
longer a stable, enterprise grade distro, we need to switch to focusing on
another distro. I'd like to use AlmaLinux.
* support deploying recent versions of Ubuntu, AlmaLinux, Windows, and
possibly Rocky and Debian (are any others needed?)

We also need to evaluate the long list of JIRA issues that are open. I've
already started looking over some of them. I think we need to balance the
fact that we don't get releases out very often, so we should include a
sufficient amount of stuff in the next release, but also not include so much
that we never actually get it out.

To add support for netplan and nftables, what would people think of using
Ansible? I could see Ansible being useful to replace a number of things that
vcld currently does. Obviously going back and changing that would be quite a
bit more work, but if we decided to, it could be done gradually. The down
side is requiring people to install and have some knowledge of Ansible to be
able to use VCL.

Please share any thoughts you have.
