This is probably a good opportunity to address the issue discussed in
VELOCITY-656, mainly removing the toString() call on objects.
What about, #if($obj) returns true if:
$obj is Boolean and is true
$obj is an instance of CharSequence and length() returns a non zero value
$obj has an isEmpty() method that returns false.
