I'm looking now at Mark 3 of Matthew's design, http://members.ii.net/~colins_electrical/ooodevel/3/
and comparing it with the last one I had seen of Daniel's, http://www.math.umd.edu/~dcarrera/openoffice/website/HomePage3/
I have some editorial comments on the wording in a few places, which I'll address in another note.
Right now I want to comment on the download box in the center of the screen. I think Daniel's version is better, for these reasons:
1) The overall size of the area is smaller, more compact, with the Legacy download info where Daniel put it.
2) It uses fewer colours (two colours are not necessary for the Legacy release, and in fact make me think at first glance that the grey and the pink are different things).
3) Having the Legacy download text as a clickable link is better than having a heading with a separate download link, because it makes the legacy link less prominant but easier to use.
