while i do not think organizing contests is a definitive solution i will outline some particularities in the Ubuntu contest increasing it's effectiveness:
- a prize: US$1000
- a tight roadmap: 31 January is the submission limit
While a prize is an incentive for some, not having one for the splash screen competition didn't deter 103 artists submitting ~ 340 entries.
The Ubuntu competition is "look and feel", i.e. a Plone skin and the entry only has to be a mockup if you wish.
The OOo homepage makeover is working within certain parameters (SourceCast), but essentially the proposals so far are suggesting that the content and structure is changed, while maintaining a similar look and feel to the existing home page.
