Nicu--in an amazingly short period of time--proposes two collages of the splashcreen competition finalists to accompany the voting period, which will commence as soon as all the parts are together. The collage would be replace the current homepage graphic. (After voting on the splashscreen, I would like to propose we use Nicu's buttons collage, but that's a different thread.)
I filed an issue so that people can see the contenders. (This list does

My own preference is for #2. I think it's great.
agreed, i also like #2 better.
BTW, the first version of #2 had a typo (thanks cdriga!) and i uploaded a corrected version
