Hi,

But if you need an outsider's opinion, I prefer this version as probably
the best so far (but not perfect):
http://www.murb.nl/extern/openoffice.org/websiteproposal/2.2/

Well, this was imho also my best version (aesthetically), but content wise this one missed some issues... these issues were raised by project leads... further more more color was requested, so I've been experimenting with adding some... still not definite.

I would replace the download button with an image similar to the one
here (on the right):
http://website.openoffice.org/nonav/tryouts/Matthew/OOoWeb2/index.htm

Nicu is no longer working on the website project... I would like to add such button, but the graphics he made need to be adjusted before being implemented.

That version is the best because:

(I think you're referring now to: http://www.murb.nl/extern/openoffice.org/websiteproposal/2.2/ ? Looking at your comments below...)

1. Search bar and "language switch" in the top right corner (where they
should be, some users don't understand a word English).

Language switch has been removed from latest versions as they need more explanation, it's more than just a translation of the english pages and search will be in place of the login... the latter will only appear when needed.

2. Download button is in a perfect location.

Well, I think so when having just one button... three buttons, and I really believe Jacqueline has good arguments for these, doesn't work anymore (just in a row that is).

3. Vertically the page isn't too long.

Agree, the current is long. Maybe the article used currently @sc40 is a too big example.

Oh, I know, it's a copy of the mozilla.org design.

:-) yes it is, or apple's (which was even earlier).. or ;) ... does anyone make a point of this one?

I'm not commenting on what should be at the bottom of the page. News,
"New to OpenOffice.org?", mission statement, events...

I don't care about this either, this is up to the project leads (advised by Louis and Jacqueline)

What I wouldn't recommend in your "current" version
(https://www.sc40.sfo.collab.net/) are the orange buttons (despite
that's the counter color of blue). OpenOffice.org is just blue blue blue
as far as I known. And maybe a small touch of peach.

I thought that too, just blue... but adding some colour makes the site sprankle... which isn't that bad... I agree to those who said my 2.2 version was too grey.

Also the location of the big news article at the bottom isn't good since
it takes attention away from the essential.

I agree on this, I need to format this section better.

I'm not sure if we need a list of all the OOo's components on the
homepage... Could the bottom of the page (below the horizontal line) be
a better place for it?

It's about telling what OpenOffice.org is, maybe they're better of listed vertically... who knows, we can try... and that's why i appreciate your step to just create an alternative design so much. It shines a new light on what is being said, altough some content has not gotten it place, and some other content is still there which we removed, it really helps by refreshing ones mind, well at least my mind, and of course keeps discussion on the new page dynamic.

g.,

Maarten
