Hi,

We're making the same fault over and over again! Yes I admit: really love to see that the design I've lead makes it to the homepage, especially after the hours I've already spent on it trying to get things sorted out. Yet, I think I have to right to throw some arguments in the discussion which is also concerning myself... Don't take things personal, I'd hate that to happen.

What is happening now? This group is imho trying to accomplish excactly what it abhores, namely stopping progression. I think what companies do when they grow too large is creating sub-groups. These are then responsible for a specific task and they'll finnish it because of economic/time pressures (happens often, but are just 'facts of life'), or just because they're finnished and satisfied with the end result (everyone would love this, but it's 'not a fact of life'). About 6 to 8 weeks ago such sub-group was formed. The three people (Jacqueline, Matthew and me) who joined the HP contest came together on a new list together with Christian Lohmaier (for technical support), Louis and Kay (the last two for obvious reasons) named SC40. First Matthew got some time to experiment, than it was time for me, and then we started to collaborate.

What happens now is that during this progress, people get annoyed. A nice image has been presented which might form the basis for a new HP. It's even hasn't been worked out in HTML and CSS and people are already screaming that the new design needs to be the new HP! ... and still we are also awaiting what is the result of this design for the sub-pages? I can understand Emily is currently also awaiting what is happening, and I don't blame her for not delivering this. I do blame the bad side of the process currently reviving again! A movement arising throwing away work. Emily has good papers (the postgresql has been a very good job), so we can trust she can make a reasonably well page... but...

At the sc40 group we decided to collaborate, not to contest anymore. And this can work when the group is task oriented, and that's what we were and still are. The SC40 site isn't finnished yet, and we're tuning... and this costs time. Some painters just wait for weeks and then judge their painting is finnished... it also is time consuming to judge your own works. And all this time is not worthless, it's part of a process. Most painters don't like comments in this period, as their work is personal. The HP is not Art, but design, so I'm open for all comments and try to reflect it. This is good process.

What is worthless is every day defending what you're doing. That is time consuming and not contributing at all! The only advantage might be that it can demand higher quality... which in fact led imho to improvements after the sketches by both Miika and Emily... Miika even joined sc40 right after.

Let me do some 'what if' reasoning: What if Emily's design is been worked out. Then we might put effort in it making it work on the staging server (sc40) as well. As it stands now the current sc-40 design needs to be removed for this, or Christian should have found something... Well, as technical experience with sc40 is getting better we might have it running in 3 weeks... but just before that, the best of all designs is being announced on this list again! What will we be doing... well no doubt! Throw away the design almost finnished and start over! Whoohoo! (and yes, I'm being sarcastic here ;) )

g.,

Maarten
