How about this: Let's let Emily's design have a fair shot. Give her a similar place to work, to work out all the code.
Then we hold a vote right here, on the website list. Not a committee. A vote.
That is not throwing away your design. That is giving Emily's design, which it appears, many people on the website list prefer, a fair chance. This would directly address many of the issues I and others have raised. This is something we can do right now, to address everyone's concerns. It would include the people who feel their work is not valued, and it would include you, who fear another committee.
Does that sound like a solution to everyone?
I, who still prefer Emily's design, think this is unfair to Maarten. I know that sounds paradoxical. But we have two problems here which we need to distinguish. One is the generally soggy, boggy and futile process of decision making. the second problem is the quality of the actual home page. Obviously the two are related. But halting Maarten's development so that we can restart the discussion makes the first problem worse.
Emily, if she wants to, should certainly be given CVS access -- she can have mine, if she wants. I do have developer status on this project. It is quite likely that her page will turn out better, or more popular with site members than Maarten's. In that case, it could replace it in a few months' time if people still feel like that. Why not?
But any change now is better than perpetual wrangling.
If we go back to the beginning of the discussion, the question asked is not "is this design perfect?". It is "Is this better than what we have?". I think the latest version of Maarten's is a clear improvement on the present page. So that's good enough.
We're not trying to be perfect. that way madness lies. We are trying to be better, which is possible.
+1 and amen to all that.
Cheers
