Hi all,

It's radically shorter now. I removed everything that seemed
unimportant, some were also fixed. There isn't much to do anymore
design-wise (if anything).

_ISSUELIST_

[ ] Do something for the gray horizontal line in the middle of the page.
It's too dominating and looks untidy. [This actually means the
background of the news block, "shadow.gif"]

[ ] Consider adding title texts (shown as tooltips) to the top
navigation links. [This would mean on all pages] [Can someone verify the
validity of this issue?]

[ ] A blue button on the homepage (default state) has 2 different shades
of blue that don't fit together and break each other. [This is somewhat
trivial, Maarten has verified this though]

[ ] More compact CSS, maybe through combining declarations and using
shorthand properties. [There is always room for improvement]

*****

The following issues were removed or marked invalid (a long list):

[I] DIVs containing only whitespace exist on homepage. For example one
with id="contextualinformation". [SourceCast needs these and fills them
with content]
[I] "Skip to contents" links for ALL pages. Both "id" and "name"
attributes for level 1 headings (on every page) to make this work.
[Not enough control over other pages]
[I] The "HTML Tidy" program suggests removing many of the indentations
in the XHTML code to decrease filesize and download times.
[Kills readability]
[I] Content-Language definition (META) and xml:lang attribute (HTML)
should be added for better internationalization. [Can't control]
[I] Way too many unnecessary and nested DIVs. Replace with P tags with
the same class or id. Remove those not needed. [Not important]
[I] Egg image: Test different images on the homepage to see if they do
good for the design. [Not important]
[I] Shorter class and ID names. Prefer "topnav", but
"forscreenreadersonly" and "contextualinformation" are unnecessarily
long. [Not important enough]
[I] Decrease the filesize of all images and backgrounds to as painfully
small as possible. [Resolved, they are painfully small already]
[I] Accesskeys for links and a comprehensive list of them in site help.
[Very good idea, but once again not enough control over other pages]
[I] There are two paragraphs (P) in the search field. One would do, with
a BR separating the texts. [Not important]
[I] META descriptions on at least some of the major index pages
(Projects, Support, About...).
[They already have "OpenOffice.org: The Open Office Suite"]
[I] "In the Media" on the homepage and left nav headings on others need
a bit more styling (I suggest a border). [They are good enough]

The following have been fixed:

[x] TITLE of the homepage must be something else than "Home". Suggesting
"OpenOffice.org".
[x] Description (META) for the homepage (Note: displayed in Google -
search for "W3C" for example and look at the first result). [I don't
know if this was added or if it was there already]
[x] Increase text size of the left-hand navigation bars to make them
stand out more.

Best,
Miikka Leskinen
