Excellent, I like the look.  A themic connection is missing though.  (other 
than the transparent blue and the icon-curve )  Lets look at figuring a 
graphic theme through all the buttons.  Time to get shot of the Seagulls and 
eggs.  Maarten's idea originally was to symbolise the birth of 2.0. So the 
image has done it's dash

Disagree completely, it would not work better at all, in either of the above.
Look at variations to be sure but all down the side would be extremely low 
impact and only useful for regular visitors. The buttons are sign posts, not 
information stops.  Different criteria apply for first time visitors
