Hi Kay et al.,
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/User_Pages_Requirements
I will try to contribute some specs toward this over the weekend. I see
a VERY short "wish list" along with some "examples". Maybe we can try to
flesh out the "wish list" better...AND, augment this page with what we
see the current problems are. So far, looking back over some older
discussion all I see really is problems with downloading for Windows,
and the NOT friendly New User page. What else? Can we itemize...
Well my idea behind this effort is not so much reasoning from what we
have now, but think about starting from scratch. Think about the user,
and nothing but the user. The user
a) wants to know OOo (why should i switch to / download / at least try
OOo ?)
b) the user wants to feel comfortable with OOo (professional look is
required, maybe examples of what others did with OOo)
c) wants to get OOo (where?)
d) wants to have fun / be productive with OOo (how?)
and probably more... how well are we facilitating this now? There is
always room for improvement.
Let me show some problems with the a, b, c, and d.
a) why.openoffice.org is a great initiative but it is not mentioned
anywhere on the main page, it is slow in loading and only tackles a part
of the problem.
b) styles differ a lot, and the still not removed underlining make the
website not much more better looking
c) actually i am not so much complaining anymore about getting it at the
moment... although automatic language selection would be a great +.
Maybe the continue to download part should trigger the download
automatically to make it just a little more friendly
d) Do you get exited?
http://documentation.openoffice.org/Samples_Templates/index.html
and, what exactly do we like about the Examples sites? Can we be specific?
I have added a few more, and tried to argue for them shortly.
Frankly, I don't like terms like "it's ugly". What does that mean? This
type of criticism is NOT constructive to anyone. And, it's SO subjective.
Did I use this term? I prefer opinions also with arguments :)
OK, enough form me for now. I like specificity... :)
Go ahead and add it :)
