Hi all,
I stumbled recently upon an interesting article:
*How to conduct a Web site competitive analysis*
[http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/webservices/library/us-analysis.html]
I had to think immediately about OOo's website. Unfortunately, some OOo
webpages look really grim.
Especially dissatisfying remains the Extensions web-page. There were
some comments (both from me and other people) for that page, but little
happened, and most importantly, there are other things that look broken.
The main OOo page needs also a major revamp.
[I have added some comments on the wiki:
see http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/User_Pages_Requirements
Indeed, http://first4quality.co.uk/OpenOffice/ looks much better.]
Regarding the *Extensions* web-page:
I browsed a number of times and I was struck that the first screen did
never display any - for me - useful extension. I believe that this has
to be changed:
- there should be some extensions displayed that capture immediately
our attention
(because there are many user types, there should be a broad coverage of
many uses. This is hardly done with only 3 extensions. And there should
be a clear mechanism to browse to the next set of extensions, which
currently is lacking: you need to change the category.)
Some classical extension sites are: Mozilla, Winamp, and surely many more.
Unfortunately I am currently a little bit tied to another issue (Multi
Page View), but a detailed competitive analysis is surely warranted.
I propose therefore the following time plan: (from - to)
0-2 wk: detect sites of interest and build a list
1-3 wk: establish items to review/analyse
4-8 wk: perform analysis proper
8-10 wk: discuss results
Sincerely,
Leonard
