My initial reaction is, well, why don't we just try it. We can experiment now, since the current website is not much good anyhow :) Maybe you could try instead of doing something fun with the gull at the right hand side, that was initially how I imagined seeing this place being used. We used it as a kind of symbolic growth of OOo (from eggs, opening eggs with beta, and being a young gull with 2.0 ... ), and it has remained in the young gull stage for way to long. Disadvantage however is that it does require some more editing. It would also test whether a little less 'in the face' campaign could work - I think the upper banner position is, especially as you mocked it, standing out to quite some extent - (...) > In the new design, it would still be useful to have some means of > quickly responding to events with a banner or similar...
