Yes - if we want to use CEE's way, then a subdomain (project or category
or some other special thingie) is needed. But...

Another way might just use a id="newstab" and use a news-specific css to
highlight it instead (and ignore the "active" one via css as well).

That will not make the news one the one that is "active" - but it will
make it look like it was :-)
