Hi Ivan, @all,
we have told several times that we use a modified why.css for:
de.openoffice.org/product/info.html
which works pretty good within the CN framework.
Why You don't use it as base for why.openoffice.org?
It is not perfect for this site at the moment but usable.
Here is a quick mock-up (live!)
http://de.openoffice.org/testdir/why_index.html
At the moment it is only the index page, but the other pages should work
to if You'll remove the ie style tags
in the document.
Regards
Marko

Hi all, just a brief update regarding the new why.openoffice.org design:
My hopes in helping to get the new design ready have been crushed
somewhat after having seen the mess that the design is in IE6. Full
credit goes to everyone who worked on the design for managing to get
it to work well on IE6, which it does when isolated from the CollabNet
HTML... but when CollabNet's HTML is introduced, it falls to pieces.
The introduction of the new stylesheet introduces a few minor display
bugs but the HTML breaks it horribly (and it's not the
header/subheader/minitabs that are breaking it from what I've tried -
I've done what I could in suppressing the CollabNet content to no
avail).
We'll need to be able to reach IE6 users with why.OOo, since many
'begginer' users are likely to still be running it (I've seen them!).
Hacking away at the design just to get it to work with IE6 is far from
my area of expertise and hardly something I want to learn... so unless
someone wants to take on this task, I'm afraid the new design is out
for IE6.
Is there any possibility at all that why.OOo could be run away from
CollabNet? Perhaps something like the Extensions website? That would
solve virtually all the headache. Otherwise, unless someone's willing
to do some hackish IE6 CSS editing, we might simply have to stick with
what we have... or code up a new design :(
- Ivan.

I would LOVE to see more of your mockup, but, for me, well, ummmm, it's kind
of illegible. Maybe a better rendering?
I don't understand why it's illegible - it's a 900x720px image.... try

?

If there is a marketing campaign similar to what was done earlier in the
year but with the links aimed at the front page rather that the download
page I think we would see a similar if not greater increase in the
downloads. Louis may know if there is a likliehood of this being
repeated some time in the near future.
I had this in mind when writing this email. If there's a possibility
that we can improve or do better, I think we should go for it - OOo
3's release will be a great opportunity for marketing campaigns (be it
paid ads or free press), and the homepage and why.openoffice.org will
probably get a lots of hits, so it makes sense to see if we can
improve them.
The list of comments sent to the webmaster list
http://website.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=dev&msgNo=9778 has
numerous suggestions from OOo's visitors that we should at the very
least consider.
Andre's connection to the internet is not always reliable. He has often
asked for help getting the CSS sorted so I wuold say go for it. It's
definitely a great looking page and having it go live with the 3.0
launch would be brilliant
I've started fixing up the CSS and managed to get rid of the most
visible problems caused by the redesign. However, lots of pages have
not been completed yet, or have broken links (e.g. some of the 'why'
entries in the menu - it's productive, multilingual, trustworthy,
etc), and some of the existing pages need revising (many of them
mention OpenOffice.org 2 explicitly and have screenshots that will
need to be replaced)... but I suppose that can wait for now - I'll
just focus on getting the base back to where it was before the
redesign.
