When I go through and remove pages marked with {{delete}} I do a few
things first to verify things before I delete:
 - check the page itself to see what the content is
 - check for pages that refer to the page to be deleted
 - check the original author and see if he/she is also the one
requesting the delete

In all cases so far, it is clear the page is obsolete etc. and it is
removed.

MediaWiki retains copies of everything, so a deleted page can be
restored if necessary (a deleted page is just another version in the
version history).... so even in the case of a page removed that should
not have been, it can be restored by someone with Sysop or higher privs
on the Wiki.
