WHIRR-294 (Separate Hadoop install and configuration scripts into more generic functions) has a patch which wouldn't need much to get it working. I was waiting for WHIRR-337 before completing WHIRR-294, but feel free to take this one over if you like. The equivalent for HBase, WHIRR-295 doesn't have a patch, but it would be straightforward to write it, since it's similar to the Hadoop one. WHIRR-342 (hadoop/hbase configuration & active roles on a node) is pretty close I think. Karel might be able to comment further.
