That's pretty much how fastinfoset works. We have an XMLStreamWriter that writes fastinfoset instead of regular XML. Thus instead of creating a normal Woodstox (or other Stax) XMLStreamWriter that wrappers the OutputStream, we create an FI version of an XMLStreamWriter that wrappers the OutputStream.
