AFAIK if you are using the kernel patch as a feature, even copying via
bin.xml is not needed. If you install it as a feature, you can use
p2-touchpoints to do the replacing of the jar.

I think the carbon team has already done it although using the kernel patch
as a feature was not adopted by products in chunk-02, chunk-03 (since the
products were already stable and frozen when the kernel patch as a feature
was introduced).

For products in chunk-04, I think the easiest would be to pack the kernel
patch as a feature which would not require the product itself to manage the
copying of resources outside repository/components/plugins directory.
