I've not really dealt with this issue, but IIRC, isn't the OpenOffice file format specification -- which is a RELAX NG schema -- maintained within an OpenOffice document? In other words, my understanding is the XML schema code is actually embedded in the spec document.
If I have that right, maybe that's worth looking at for hints?
