Indeed, the macros are not in the XML stream when saving with OOo1.x. Unfortunately you will have to use the Office API to receive them.
The good news, the macros have been saved in current OOo2.0 builds (works with both file formats OpenOffice.org XML and the new OASIS Open Document Format).
