One thing about tables is, that OOo Writer internally uses a slightly different table model than exposed in OpenDocument. Before going into

The content.xml table layout has me puzzled. colspan follows the model of many tables, using an attribute value. The use of subtables, with rowcount matching the rowspan is new to me. I'm wondering if there is a rationale here that I'm missing.
