That would be a way to solve it, but having real table styles is quite
tempting.

The first priority wrt. ODF is not to create anything that violates the
specification. Second to nth priority is to support everything written
down in the spec. You should see that ODF is *not* the OOo file format
with another name (though a particular competitor likes to allege that),
it's a standard created from a larger group where OOo was only a part of
 so it's not surprising that there are things in the spec that currently
are not supported by OOo. For the reasons you mentioned this is subject
to change, but the speed of these changes may vary.
