Hi bryan,

your email is almost totally unclear to me I do not really understand what you want to achieve. Perhaps you can elaborate on your ideas a little bit.

As a note: for embedding content into an ODF documents there already do exist the following two mechanisms: OLE and Mozilla/Netscape Plugin interface. The later is supported in current browsers on multiple platforms and the first originated on the Windows platform but was later ported to other platforms like Linux also. Both should work on nearly all platforms supported by OOo, except for perhaps some exotic not-yet-finished ports.

What´s your "cross platform plugins project" all about? Is it a third alternative "plugin" concept for applications like OpenOffice.org or firefox or perhaps even Word or just a "plugin" concept for some other special program only? Or is it any type of extension to OpenOffice.org? Or is it something like an extension to some other program?

Do you just want to develop an OpenOffice.org extension that is just adding a toolbar to OpenOffice.org plus perhaps some additional menu entries with some new nice functionallity like opening the current document in word or sending it to google docs etc.? Or do you want to design some new kind of plugin-like API for some programs to use? Or do you just want to embedd something designed by you via one of the available mechanisms OLE or Mozilla/Netscape Plugin interface into some sample ODF Documents.

Also the choice of this mailing list for your email is kind of strange to me as from the little of what I think I did understand from your email a possible connection to anything OpenOffice.org XML related of what you want to do would just be one example of some kind of usage of it. So depending on what your idea all is about probably the extensions mailing list or the general developer mailing list or the api mailing list might be a better fit.

Kind regards,
Bernd Eilers

Hi,
I'm currently working on a sort of cross platform plugins project, and
as a demonstration of it I thought I might make examples that ran in
Open Office (this is actually not budgetted for the project but I have
some leeway).

This project would allow one to connect the document with various
other tools. So the question is what kind of things would be good for
Open Office integration - here are some things I can guess at that I
can implement quickly:

1. open the current Open Office document in Microsoft Word (or
appropriate MS Office tech, I choose word because I pretty much only
use Writer)
2. Send the Current Open Office document to Google docs.
3. Extract XML representation of the current Open Office document and
insert into XML Database Collection.

other things that you can think of that would be nice to have?

Also the look of such a plugin, basically it will be as sort of a
toolbar or menu at some point in the document - as users of OO where
do you think you would find it most useful, styling suggestions (I was
going with the classic upper right hand corner programmer designed
this look, but if you have any suggestions for nice designs for stuff
in OO - like say Corporate boilerplater, links in templates type stuff
that I can look at that would be nice)

Thanks,
Bryan Rasmussen
