We should improve the travis tests.
Goals:
- Better cache usage to increase speed (at the moment the cache is almost
unused because the [cache hash depends on the environment
variables|https://docs.travis-ci.com/user/caching/#caches-and-build-matrices])
- make clear what the tests do
