Learner.syncWithLeader calls zk.getZKDatabase().clear() right before
zk.getZKDatabase().deserializeSnapshot(leaderIs); Then the first thing
deserializeSnapshot does is another clear().
Suggest to remove the clear() in syncWithLeader.
