Unfortunately I think we need backward compatibility tests for protocol changes. Maybe the flag is not needed and I am fine with it. I am not a committer so these are only my 2 cents, but I would like to see real backward compatibility tests before committing wire protocol changes Cc @anmolnar @phunt
