You could also append a smiley button next to the field, and have it inside the 'floating rock' as The_Tick suggests in the screenshot. Maybe also expand it and have it replace the toolbar icons, with various buttons below the text field, for various things, such as voice, video, link, information, history, etc. inside the 'floating rock' - All with some nice black iOS inspired icons. Just throwing out ideas here.
