A concrete plan of what to do with funds, as mentioned by others, is
what's needed.  If we found that such a plan called for money we don't
have, a fundraiser would be a great next step.

As it is, our problem is largely organizational, since we have
talented people show up but find that there skills aren't effectively
utilized.  As Adium's often-absent 'lead developer' that's my fault.
I welcome the efforts of anyone who would do a better job.

IM Freedom is a registered 501(c) organization.  Donations directly to
it (which may be in our name and earmarked for us) carry no tax burden
for us and are tax-deductible for the donor.

That is correct.  The donate at adiumx.com PayPal address is not
linked to IM Freedom directly, and those funds are technically income
in my name.  The volume of donations (minimal) and small amount of
interest earned on the funds held in trust by me for Adium has not
made it worth dealing with organizing something better.
