So when I use kannel I should make one http request per recipient? Has anybody tried to send messages to more than 10.000 recipients? How does it perform? I mean it does create a huge network overhead.

This "multi-send" feature is broken and should not be used. It doesn't work correctly with any of the options that depend on or affect phone numbers.
