Which version of Kannel, i.e. which checkout cvs date are you using? At line 65 we have (in the current cvs tree) an if statement and this is not causing the assertion problem. We need to know either which exact version you are using or you may copy a scope arround line 65 of bb_smscconn.c and send it to the list.
