Support To German Characters

Hello

I am using the latest version of Kannel-1.1.6.
I wanted to know if Kannel supports to all the Gernman Characters?
(The UMALT). If the some of the characters are not supported, how are they 
going to be treated? Is the message is discarded or it is going to be sent 
as it finds?

Please clarify
