I've seen this before. Long time ago. I can't quite remember?
Either it is when reading your conf file ... so is everything okay in there?
OR Does it happen when you receive sms?
Or when?
I use kannel 1.2.1 (OLD) and when receiving sms not all parameters were supported.
I found I could not use %u and %A parameters
Your mileage will vary so try them but keep in mind they may cause problems.

e.g. from my kannel.conf

# Redirected replies   max-messages = 0
# so I receivesms and log it but don't send silly sms to foam
group = sms-service
keyword = default
# %u %A (s45 not used)
get-url =
+"http://me/topupclub-cgi-bin/receivesms.cgi?from=%p&to=%P&text=%a&smscid=%i&dr1=%d&user=%n&coding=%
+c&charset=%C"
max-messages = 0
concatenation = true
#catch-all = true
# max-messages 0 => no dlr (unless is error)

the assert (crash) is done on purpose to let kannel user know something is
 misconfigured or not working.

what version of kannel are you using?
