I do not see need for such split. What is really needed to allow
flexible packaging of kannel - to separate db engine specific parts
into own shared objects. Like (for example) freeradius-mysql,
freeradius-postfix, ... - the goal is to make it installable by
"plain" admin - I've spent 2 days recently teaching such guy to
type ./configure --some-options && make && make install && cut&paste
initscripts and configs.

Glad to read it.
I will merge smsc/Makefile.am part as soon as I'll done migrating my
production server to new hardware & fedora 3.
