Are you running out of file descriptors?  I've had a similar problem
where the remote host was not closing the TCP connection (since it
saw a HTTP/1.1 protocol declaration).

Just a thought.

hmm, we should see ERROR logs then here from the underlying system call if we run out of file descriptors while runtime, right?
