It would be nice to have this option (use message_payload or split) as a config parameter in smpp smsc group. By any chance, have anyone implement it already? Thanks

The issue is that SMPP is considered a "standardized protocol", but in the real-world we have vendors that implement certain feature (in case they are considered optional) and others don't. In this case some SMSCs may be capable to handle this, other's don't. We try to abstract as much as possible.
