Thank you for all of your help! It turns out that when I installed Kannel in Ubuntu using the package manager, it only started up the bearerbox and wap processes by default. Hence why smsbox was not running.
I ended up adding a line in the kannel startup script in init.d to force smsbox to start. However, I cannot figure out how to disable the wap startup (which I do not need). Can someone give me an idea of where the bearerbox and wap options are set that the init.d script is grabbing? Lastly, the Kannel documentation needs to be updated if you want people to get help from the users vs. devel list. The Kannel PDF states to send your log files and questions to devel.
