While reading smsbox.c I found the smsbox group accepts an undocumented option, sms-length, which allows to modify maximum sms length globally in smsbox. I tested group smsc max-sms-octets plus group smsbox sms-length together and they allow larger than 140 characters messages to enter sendsms and exit an smsc driver. This is enough for my purposes. If anyone is interested a per sendsms-user sms-length may still make sense. ciao Luca
