So, OLPC is going to have to have a 'known good' list for USB hardware, I think. I don't see a way out. I have a 512MB PNY dongle that worked "for a while" on my t41, and works fine on OLPC; a 1GB sandisk that works fine on the laptop, though only with powered hub; same sandisk works fine on OLPC WITHOUT powered hub; and so on.
I'll 2nd those reports. Bitworks has a product with a custom USB stack in it and I'm dealing with a lot of the same issues. If you look at a lot of the consumer type products with USB on them most of them have a "known good" list. As another data point the 3 different types of USB keys I've used with my OLPC all work fine _without_ a powerd hub. My 1GiB key runs the redhat build with no errors. The others are too small for the redhad build so I've not tested them. -- Richard A.
