doh; of course it said the stuff about automake1.4 later on the page I
forgot to read :-/ -- clearly doing this in the background while I pay
attention to other things doesn't work that well.
It would be helpful if "./sugar-jhbuild sanitycheck" detected this issue.
The rsvg thing is still an open issue.
