Using ext3 on USB keys has been causing problems.

 * The firmware can't handle the journal properly

 * The journaling is poorly suited to FLASH wear characteristics

 * My experience has been that the filesystem tends to degrade when I use a
USB to transfer data back and forth between my development host system and
the target OLPC board, causing me to have to dd a new image onto the key
 from time to time.

The general flakiness level of our development process would go down if we
switched to ext2 on the USB keys, and made writes synchronous.
