Not that I'm aware of. You could set up a gstreamer pipeline that writes raw audio into a named pipe (FIFO), and then read the data out of the FIFO in python, throwing away data you don't want. If you're recording from the microphone, amplifier weirdness requires an approach like this, because the microphone must be turned on well before you start recording (see bug 3813).
