As long as the wifi hardware is working, you don't need a cable.  Even if
the system won't boot, OFW has a complete wifi network stack.  You could
implement this as a special key to hold down on boot, to enter recovery
mode.

Unfortunately, it gets fairly complicated if you try to make it secure and
wireless.  I could imagine generating a random password and displaying it
on the screen, but this requires a fancy password-protected fileserver,
and doesn't work if the screen is broken.
