Now I see why I couldn't find it. It's called "flush". Original patch I had seen - back in 2005 http://lwn.net/Articles/165733/ - looks like some variant of it made it into 2.6.19. man mount days: flush If set, the filesystem will try to flush to disk more early than normal.
